The garden at Sledmere is gaining increasing prominence for its dynamic and innovative development programme. So much so, BBC Gardeners World recently paid us a visit to film our beautiful Walled gardens.

The walled garden was designed to maintain it’s formal and traditional style in keeping with it’s history but giving it a contemporary twist. Many of our visitors return on a regular basis to see what’s new; nine years in, the garden has become a place to explore and discover different planting areas that have an emphasis on form and colour and overall impact on the eye. Each area created has a different feel from the last, and each element begs to be explored drawing you through the garden losing sense of time in the process.

THE ANGEL GARDEN

Inspired by the sad and beautiful song ‘Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan translated into a garden with curves and a soft colour palette.

LARK ASCENDING

The music of Vaughan Williams inspired this garden, using the same palette as Angel garden but in a contemporary way to create a garden with a long season of interest.

 

Keighley & Worth Valley Railway -Return Journey

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is a unique 5-mile branch line railway set in the heart of West Yorkshire, running heritage steam and diesel trains from the industrial landscape of Keighley to the stunning Brontë Country of Oxenhope.

 

Fairfax House

Come and unlock the splendour within the finest Georgian town house in England. A classical architectural masterpiece of its age, Fairfax House was originally the winter home of Viscount Fairfax. Its richly decorated interior was designed by York’s most distinguished eighteenth-century architect, John Carr.

Extensively adapted in the twentieth century as a cinema and dance hall, Fairfax House was saved from decay and returned to its former glory by York Civic Trust in 1982-84.

Today, Fairfax House once more transports you to the splendour of city-living in Georgian York, the centre of polite society.

The superb Noel Terry collection of furniture, clocks, paintings and decorative arts, described by Christie’s as one of the finest private collections of the twentieth century, perfectly complements the house, bringing it to life and creating a special lived-in feeling.
