Welcome to Huntington Castle & Gardens, a family home since 1625, situated in the picturesque historical village of Clonegal, County Carlow.
A warm welcome awaits at Alexander & Clare Durdin Robertson familys ancestral home.
Over the past decade, the family have worked tirelessly to open the doors of Huntington and share its beauty with the public.
Often working day and night to keep Huntington running, wearing many hats here - working as a farmer, renovating the castle, greeting guests, giving castle tours and even working in our tea rooms.
Huntington Castle was built by Sir Laurence Esmonde in 1625. Formerly an experienced soldier under Queen Elizabeth I, he fought under King James I as a major-general in Ireland, ultimately becoming governor of Duncannon Fort in Wexford.
As a reward for his loyal service, he was given a peerage in Clonegal, becoming Lord Esmonde, while on an expedition, he met and married Ailish O'Flaherty (granddaughter of the Pirate Queen of Connacht Grace O'Malley). During this time, the castle remained mainly a garrison, protecting the Dublin-Wexford trade route along the River Derry.
It was not until 1680 that the former garrison was formally named Huntington and began to evolve into the family home it is today, with formal gardens being laid out by Lord Esmonde's grandson, Sir Laurnece II.
Upon enterting the estate, you are greeted with Lime trees leading up th Avenue, planted by Sir Laurence II in 1687.
Huntington remained relatively untouched until the 1700's, when Sir Laurence IV added a wing and the ornate ceiling in 1720.
Around the 1860s the castle was once again altered by Alexander Durdin. His only child, a daughter named Helen, became heiress to the castle and the family name changed once again upon her marriage to Herbert Robertson; and so begins the current family name, Durdin Robertson. Their son, Manning Durdin Robertson, showcased his architectural style of unsing concrete, by adding the conservatory balcony and the greenhouse - leaving Huntington Castle into the home we know today.
Take time, sit awhile and visit a truly magnificent world of Castle and Gardens all in one place, and meet the Owner!!
The parterre, or formal gardens, were laid out by Lord Esmonde in the 1680s. Featuring impressive formal plantings & layouts, including the fragrant rose walk.
Over the past few years, we have invested heavily to restore the stew ponds & lake. We are pleased to open the original water gardens, laid out by the Esmondes in the 1680s, to the public. Enjoy the tranquil serenity & spot the local wildlife.
Enjoy a stroll along the world-famous Yew Walk, and spend some time amongst the ancients. Planted before the formal gardens, the Yew trees are over 500 years old.
As the seasons change, so do our gardens. Nestled beneath our Champion Trees, the snowdrops grace our woodlands in January before bluebells welcome Spring.
